UK backs Mzimba farmers to turn crops into income

Mzimba farmers could have more opportunities to turn farming from a means of survival into a reliable source of income.

This follows the renewing of interest in strengthening agriculture in the district by the British Government.

British High Commissioner to Malawi Leigh Stubblefield made the commitment during a meeting with Inkosi Yamakhosi M’mbelwa V at Edingeni in Mzimba.

Stubblefield said farmers need to move beyond producing mainly for household consumption and increase production of crops for the market.

She said higher production would allow farmers to take part in agribusiness, earn more income and become financially independent.

She said stronger agricultural production could also create opportunities for other businesses and income-generating activities within local communities.

M’mbelwa V welcomed the British Government’s continued interest in development initiatives targeting people in Mzimba.

The traditional leader said such support could help improve household incomes while complementing government efforts to build stronger and more economically resilient communities.
