[News] Kanebo Allie, February 2022: Upcoming brand overhaul with “beach-friendly” reformulations

The Kao Group has announced that Kanebo’s Allie brand will be totally overhauled to have more sustainable packaging and new “beach friendly” formulations. The new Allie Chrono Beauty series (which may actually turn out to be written differently in English; the press release only has it in katakana and it’s not on the packaging images) (ETA that it’s Chrono Beauty without the hyphen; corrected where possible) will have five product categories (ten counting variations) that will collectively be released on February 12, 2022 in Japan (and in 2022 for most other countries and 2024 for China).

Personally the current main product, Allie Extra UV Gel N, is my HG sunscreen, and I thought I would be fine with future reformulations because the product has continually improved since I first started using it in 2013, but this “beach-friendly” reformulation has an entirely different focus and I’m VERY nervous. As they explain with the map below, as of November 2021, sunscreens containing certain ingredients are restricted or banned in Hawaii, the Virgin Islands, Aruba, Bonaire, Thailand, and the Republic of Palau.

I find the current formulation very effective and it doesn’t hurt my eyes and doesn’t make me break out or anything and doesn’t leave a white trace all over my belongings. Please please please don’t be a change for the worse…

(And now, putting my personal panic aside.)

The outer packaging will use FSC-certified paper, and the tubes/bottles will partly be composed of biomass material. There will also be a limited edition product that will be released in May that uses materials recycled from old in-store paper materials, with part of the proceeds being donated to environmental organizations (singular/plural unclear).

The new line-up

It seems like the line-up will mostly remain the same aside from a few new versions of the tone-up/color-correcting products, with all the existing products reformulated to meet international regulations as of November 2021.

The new product names are as follows:

Or maybe the reformulations should be considered new products, too, if they’re formulated to be in compliance with Palau’s regulations (discussed below).

They’re all rated SPF 50+ PA++++, are still “friction-proof,” and, aside from the milk, are “super waterproof” (which usually means they’ve passed an 80 min. water resistance test, and has been the case for their prior formulations). The regular gel, milk, and tone-up line also protect your skin from dirt/dust/PM2.5/pollen/etc. (which is common for Japanese sunscreens lately). The regular gel, milk, and facial gel are fragrance free.

Release dates

The reformulated/new products are scheduled to be released on February 12, 2022 in Japan; some time in 2022 from Kanebo Taiwan, Kanebo Hong Kong, Kanebo Thailand, Kanebo Malaysia, Kanebo Korea, and Kao Singapore; and 2024 from Kanebo China.

Sunscreen regulations

Out of curiosity (and as a kind of a coping mechanism because I’m still in shock 😭), I looked up the regulations that they mention in their map, assuming those are the ones they took into account for their reformulations.

Palau has banned every single organic (chemical) filter commonly used in Japan, so I’m (fearfully) wondering whether the new Allie sunscreens might only have inorganic (mineral) filters. The reformulated products might also be better described as new products, too. —Unless maybe they aren’t compliant with Palau’s regulations after all? (Keeping my fingers crossed)

Here’s Lab Muffin’s take on the whole reef safe thing, btw. I haven’t been to a beach in ages (hint: sun allergy) so I’m certainly not going anywhere near coral reefs and am honestly seriously bummed that my HG (for more than eight years!!) sunscreen will most likely undergo a major change based on laws that aren’t even legislated in Japan.

Ingredient lists

To continue from the original post: The new ingredient lists are now on Kanebo’s official product catalogue. Overall, it turns out that the new formulations do contain organic (chemical) filters; I find it particularly interesting that Mexoryl XL is among them (for Allie Chrono Beauty Gel UV EX and Allie Chrono Beauty Tone Up UV). While this is great news for me, I think they should be clear that you can’t take their sunscreens to Palau without their being confiscated on arrival. I guess this could be why they keep emphasizing that they’re following the regulations as of November 2021 (I don’t know what the regulations were at that point), but I find this makes their marketing rather misleading.

Not surprisingly, the two preexisting shades for what is now known as Allie Chrono Beauty Color Tuning UV seem to have changed very little, since they were just released last year. They took out the Hydrolyzed Collagen (as they did in all of the reformulations) and some ingredients have moved around within the ingredient list, and that’s all I can tell based on the lists alone. Also based on the ingredient lists alone, the milk (previously Allie Extra UV Perfect N, now Allie Chrono Beauty Milk UV EX) seems to have changed the most significantly.

Here are my translations of the ingredient lists as they are currently listed on the product catalogue. I’ll try and remember to check to see whether they match what’s printed on the final packaging whenever I see them at the store (ETA: done). Note that I’m just bilingual and have no other qualifications (no background in science, etc.).
