写真の居場所はどこにあるのか

前回の記事では、「なぜ写真家はFediverseを無視できないのか」というテーマについて書いた。
写真を撮ることは、昔からほとんど変わっていない。変わったのは、写真を残す場所だった。
今回は、その「場所」について考えてみたい。写真は、どこに残すのが正解なんだろう。
In my previous article, I wrote about why photographers shouldn’t ignore the Fediverse.
The act of taking photographs hasn’t changed very much over the years.
What has changed is where we choose to leave them.
This time, I’d like to think a little more about that place.
Where do photographs truly belong?
インターネットという海
THE INTERNET AS AN OCEAN
私はよく、インターネットを一つの大きな海に例えることがある。
その海には、たくさんの島が浮かんでいる。
Instagramという島。
Xという島。
Threadsという島。
MastodonやPixelfedという島。
そして、まだ私たちが知らない小さな島も世界中に存在している。
私たちは毎日、そのどこかの島で写真を見て、人と出会い、写真を発表している。
島ごとに文化があり、写真の見られ方も少しずつ違う。
だから、同じ一枚の写真でも、島が変われば受け取られ方も変わる。
私自身、多くの写真家と出会えたのもSNSのおかげだった。
I often think of the internet as one vast ocean.
Scattered across it are countless islands.
An island called Instagram.
An island called X.
An island called Threads.
An island called Mastodon.
An island called Pixelfed.
And many smaller islands that most of us have never even discovered.
Every day, we visit one of those islands.
We look at photographs, meet new people, and share our own.
Each island has its own culture.
The same photograph can be seen differently depending on where it appears.
Many of the photographers I’ve met over the years are people I first encountered through social media.
でも、海は少し狭くなった。
WHEN THE OCEAN BECAME SMALLER
ここで、一つ疑問が浮かぶ。
インターネットは一つの海なのに、なぜ私たちは一つの島だけで暮らすことが当たり前になったんだろう。
隣の島には、素晴らしい写真家がいるかもしれない。でも、その存在を知る機会は意外と少ない。
別の島へ移ろうとすると、それまで築いてきた人とのつながりを失ってしまうこともある。
だから、多くの人は同じ島に住み続ける。
気がつけば、その島の価値観だけが世界のすべてのように感じてしまう。
でも、本当にそうなんだろうか。海は、本当はもっと広かったはずだ。
But here’s something I’ve been wondering.
If the internet is one ocean, why have we become so comfortable living on just one island?
There may be remarkable photographers on the island next door.
Yet we rarely have the chance to discover them.
Sometimes, moving to another island means leaving behind the relationships we’ve built.
So most of us stay where we are.
Before we realize it, the values of that one island begin to feel like the whole world.
But are they?
Perhaps the ocean has always been much bigger than we imagined.
私自身が気づいたこと
WHAT I REALIZED
10年ほど前、私は初めてポートフォリオサイトを作った。当時の目的は、とてもシンプルだった。
自分が何者なのかを伝えるため。ネット上の名刺のような存在だった。
でも今振り返ると、本当の理由は少し違っていた気がする。
映像作品を多く投稿していた時期、写真展でこんな声をかけられたことがあった。
「映像をやっている人ですよね。」
もちろん嬉しかった。でも、どこか違和感もあった。
私の中では、ずっと写真が活動の中心だったからだ。その時、あることに気づいた。
人は、SNSで見た一面を、その人自身だと思ってしまう。
写真を多く投稿すれば「写真家」。
映像を多く投稿すれば「映像の人」。
でも、その印象は、自分が意図して作ったものとは限らない。
そして、これは私だけの話ではないと思う。
クリエイターが普段とは違う表現に挑戦すると、それまで見てくれていた人には届きにくくなることがある。
それはアルゴリズムの影響かもしれない。
あるいは、見る人が無意識のうちに「その人らしさ」を求めているからかもしれない。
SNSは、一つの表現を育てることは得意だ。
でも、新しい挑戦をゆっくり育てていくことは、少し苦手なのかもしれない。
私自身も、それを何度か経験してきた。
SNSへ写真を投稿し続けるうちに、アルゴリズムや見る人の記憶の中で、「自分は何者なのか」が少しずつ形作られていく。
それだけSNSが世界に与える影響は大きいということなんだろう。
私は、「自分が何者か」を決める場所を、SNSだけに委ねたくない。
だから私は、SNSとは別に、自分の場所を持つ意味があると思うようになった。
ポートフォリオサイトやブログは、ただ写真を並べるための場所ではない。
SNSの流れから少し距離を置いて、
「私はどういう人でいたいのか」
を、自分の言葉で静かに伝えられる場所でもある。
About ten years ago, I built my first portfolio website.
At the time, my goal was simple.
To show people who I was.
It was my business card on the internet.
Looking back now, I think the real reason was something else.
There was a period when I shared a lot of video work.
At photography exhibitions, people would often say,
“You’re the video person, aren’t you?”
I appreciated hearing that.
But it also felt slightly strange.
Photography had always been at the center of what I do.
That’s when I realized something.
People often mistake the version of you they see on social media for who you really are.
Post mostly photographs, and you’re “the photographer.”
Post mostly videos, and you’re “the video creator.”
But that image isn’t always one you’ve consciously created.
And I don’t think this only happens to me.
When creators step outside the style people expect from them, their new work often becomes harder to reach.
Maybe that’s because of algorithms.
Or maybe people naturally look for consistency.
Social media is very good at helping one identity grow.
But it may not be the best place for slowly growing a new one.
I’ve experienced that more than once.
Over time, algorithms—and people’s memories—begin shaping who you are.
That’s how powerful social media has become.
I don’t want social media to be the only place that defines who I am.
That’s why I came to believe in having a place of my own.
A portfolio website or a blog isn’t simply somewhere to display photographs.
It’s a place where I can step back from the constant flow of social media…
and quietly ask,
“What kind of person do I want to be?”
in my own words.
島と島の間に橋を架ける
BUILDING BRIDGES
前回の記事でも少し触れたけれど、私がFediverseに惹かれた理由は、新しいSNSだったからではない。
私がおもしろいと思ったのは、
「島と島をつなぐ」
という考え方だった。
橋があれば、Mastodonにいる人がPixelfedで公開された写真と出会うこともできる。
違う島にいる写真家と言葉を交わすこともできる。
そして、もし今いる島を離れることになっても、それまで築いてきた人とのつながりを保ったまま、新しい場所で活動を続けられる。
私は技術そのものよりも、その考え方に惹かれた。
インターネットを、もう一度一つの海として考えようとする姿勢に。
島を増やしたいわけじゃない。
海を取り戻したいだけなんだ。
As I briefly mentioned in my previous article, I wasn’t drawn to the Fediverse simply because it was another social network.
What fascinated me was a different idea.
Connecting one island to another.
With a bridge, someone on Mastodon can discover photographs shared on Pixelfed.
Photographers living on different islands can still meet, talk, and inspire one another.
Even if you decide to leave one island behind, you don’t necessarily have to lose the relationships you’ve built.
More than the technology itself, I was drawn to the philosophy behind it.
The idea of seeing the internet as one ocean again.
It’s not about creating more islands.
It’s about rediscovering the ocean.
写真は、一つの場所だけで生きていくものなんだろうか。
DOES A PHOTOGRAPH NEED ONLY ONE HOME?
考えてみると、写真家は昔から一つの場所だけで活動してきたわけではない。
写真展。写真集。雑誌。ZINE。そしてSNS。
どれも役割が違う。
写真展には空間がある。写真集には時間がある。SNSには出会いがある。
だから私は、一つだけを選ぶものではないと思っている。写真には、一つ以上の居場所があっていい。
インターネットも、きっと同じなんだ。
When I think about it, photographers have never relied on just one place.
Exhibitions.
Photobooks.
Magazines.
Zines.
And now, social media.
Each serves a different purpose.
An exhibition gives photographs a space.
A photobook gives them time.
Social media gives them encounters.
That’s why I don’t believe we have to choose only one.
A photograph can belong in more than one place.
Perhaps the internet should work that way, too.
これからも問い続けるために
KEEP ASKING QUESTIONS
SNSをやめたいわけじゃない。
写真展や写真集の代わりを作りたいわけでもない。
私はただ、「自分の場所」が欲しかった。
10年前、ポートフォリオサイトは、自分が何者なのかを伝える場所だった。
でも今は少し違う。
私が残したいのは、
「自分が何者か」ではなく、
「私はどういう人でいたいのか」
なのかもしれない。
だから、この場所も完成することはない。
写真を撮り、書き、そして、疑問をやめない。
Dystronixは、そんな場所として育てていきたい。
I’m not trying to leave social media behind.
Nor am I trying to replace exhibitions or photobooks.
I simply wanted
a place of my own.
Ten years ago, a portfolio website was a place to tell people who I was.
Today, it means something different.
I’m no longer interested in proving who I am.
I’m more interested in asking,
“What kind of person do I want to become?”
That’s why this place will never really be finished.
I’ll keep taking photographs.
Keep writing.
And most importantly,
never stop questioning.
I hope Dystronix will continue to grow into a place that does the same.
