What doesn't make sense?
This makes no sense! Or does it?
A common complaint I hear when some people play games is how "it doesn't make sense". This is often sprinkled throughout the gameplay, liberally, like grated cheese on pasta.
Any mild inconvenience with the story? It doesn't make sense. Characters that come back from life? It doesn't make sense. Houses that have hidden mechanisms that open secret rooms? It doesn't make sense.
It is easy to say and it feels good and comfortable to repeat it. It is such a verbal crutch for any time they feel challenged by the experience that it mires any good will I have towards them.
I strongly believe that if a person's immediate and candid reaction to some art is a variation of "it makes no sense", it is not a good look for them.
On one hand, it might be because in their head, their headcanon has been challenged, or somehow does not align with their past experiences, unaware that time might have changed your opinions or fogged your memory.
On the other hand, it might be because the game creator (or movie creator, or book creator, what have you) has crafted the art in such a way to assert their expression in the best way possible with their given tools and abilities, but which does not necessarily follow the steps of their past works.
In either case, "it doesn't make sense" is a blunt interjection that signals, "I don't want to engage with this art, actually". No different from seeing a modern painting and immediately saying "a child could do better". This shuts down any dialogue you could have with art and yourself.
This is purely my opinion, but to comb everything you consume to find "sense" in them is a misplaced effort. Of course, there is a lot of fun to be had in theorycrafting and discussing what you felt with your friends; that's normal and expected. But if you often find yourself uttering that sentence, then perhaps you should reassess what exactly you're trying to assign to the art you are experiencing.
Even in real life, a lot of things that feel nonsensical actually happen, and that's what makes the world so remarkable.
