BlueSky for Adult Creators

BlueSky is a popular Twitter/X alternative that allows you to share your content, post status updates and find fans and fellow creators. As an adult content creator, you can use BlueSky the same way you would use Twitter/X or other status update social networks and BlueSky also includes other features such as Starter Packs, Feeds and Hashtags.

Disclaimer: I've created this guide for adult content creators who are interested in using BlueSky based on my own experiences with the platform and research I have done regarding the platform. If you have any questions or suggestions, please don't hesitate to comment or reach out to me.

Getting Started on BlueSky

Once you've signed up for BlueSky, the very first thing you're going to want to do is set up your profile. For adult content creators, two things are relatively important to add to your bio on your profile: your age and an age verification link (such as Yoti or a site where you have been age verified using your ID or passport).

Set up your BlueSky by completing these tasks:

• Add a Header Picture (1500 x 500 pixel or 3:1 ratio - JPG or PNG)
• Add a Profile Picture (400 x 400 pixel or 1:1 ratio - JPG or PNG)
• Write Your Bio (256 characters, can include emojis and links which count towards character limit)

Posting on BlueSky

BlueSky doesn't have an algorithm as you might know it. When you first sign up, you will have 3 main walls on your home page: Discover, Following and Video. Discover will show you posts from various accounts on BlueSky, as well as trending topics across the platform. Once you begin following people, you will see their posts in your Following tab. Videos shows you popular videos on the site.

Posting on BlueSky is incredibly simple and if you are familiar with other social networks, posting will likely be very intuitive for you. Below, I've provided some tips and notes about posting on BlueSky:

• Posts are limited to 300 characters including links and emojis
• Threads can be made by using the "+" icon at the bottom of the posting window
• Hashtags are useful to increase your reach. Check out my full post, Hashtags on BlueSky for Adult Creators (coming soon), for more information.
• You can post up to 10 pictures at a time in JPG, JPEG, PNG or GIF formats. Recommended ratios are square 1:1 or 4:5 and 16:9.
• You can post 1 video at a time, up to 3 minutes long. Best practices indicate that videos should be posted in the following formats: MP4, MOV, WebM, and MPEG and 1080p is supported and recommended.
• Label your posts! When you add media to your posts, you should be labeling it. BlueSky will also add moderation labels to your posts. Available labels include: Suggestive (Pictures meant for adults), Nudity (Artistic or non-erotic nudity), Adult (Sexual activity or erotic nudity) and Graphic Media (Media that may be disturbing or inappropriate for some audiences).
• It is highly recommended to use ALT text for every media post (pictures, videos or GIFs). Check out my full post to get more information about ALT Text on BlueSky for Adult Creators (coming soon).

What should I post?

Ultimately how you choose to post on BlueSky will be up to you and your goals on the platform. Will you be using BlueSky to find subscribers for your fansites? Connect with other sex workers? Cultivate a community of like-minded mutuals? A little bit of all of the above? Everyone's strategy is slightly different but remember more than anything, on any site you're on, personality is the most important thing!

When should I post on BlueSky?

Where you are from and who you're trying to target will influence the time of day you are posting. As the majority of users are from the US, you may find that sticking to waking hours for that country will garner you the most engagement on your posts. Most active users on BlueSky will post multiple times throughout their day, from thoughts to pictures to promos and reposts.

Feeds on BlueSky

One of the biggest features on BlueSky is Feeds. These are curated, custom, user-made streams that highlight specific topics and themes. Real NSFW or ButtSky are two examples of feeds for adult creators on BlueSky.

Typically, feeds will have unique words, hashtags or emojis that you add to your posts to be included in them. Most feeds will include pinned posts that detail how you can make your posts appear there. Starter Packs and Lists on BlueSky

Starter Packs work similarly to Feeds on BlueSky, but instead of posts they focus more on similar users. Instead of topics dictated by words, hashtags or emojis, they are based on people in your circle of friends.

For example, one of my own Starter Packs is Smoking Fetishists on BlueSky. With it, I have gathered up a list of all the smoking fetishists on BlueSky. When you visit the pack, you only see posts from those people.

In the same vein as Starter Packs is Lists. Lists work very similarly to Starter Packs, except they don't have a user limit prior to publishing and they are more for personal use than public use. Think of Starter Packs as a recommendation list you use to start following a new community during onboarding. Think of a List as a private group you use to observe a topic even if you don't follow everyone on that list.

Engagement on BlueSky

Because BlueSky doesn't have an algorithm as you may know it, engagement on the platform is very important. There are multiple ways to engage on BlueSky and below, we'll delve into some ideas and tips on using the engagement features. Generally, as a user of social networking, you are likely already very familiar with the concept and etiquette behind these features.

Commenting

Join the conversation around specific posts by adding your replies. Ideally, you will not use this feature to promote yourself unless a poster specifically asks for it.

Your comments should be:

• On topic and relevant to the original post
• Add value, additional thoughts or support for the original post

Reposting

Reposting is one of the most important ways you can engage on BlueSky to help users discover new people they might like to follow and network with others. On BlueSky, you can simply "repost" a post or you can "quote post", which will allow you to add your own commentary along with the original post.

Liking

Who doesn't love a like? Liking is a great way to show your support for your fellow creators and is also a great way to gauge how well your own posts are performing. Liking a post is by far the easiest way to engage on BlueSky.

In conclusion:

BlueSky is a popular Twitter/X alternative that will likely feel very comfortable for the average social media user. It is packed with features to explore and is a great way to network with other adult content creators, find new fans and promote your content. Without an algorithm, meaningful engagement is paramount to your success on the platform.
