Sex with Sue 📺

I am such a sucker for a good sex documentary!

If you don't know who Sue Johanson was, you're seriously missing out. I feel like every Canadian millenial is at least somewhat aware of her. She was a nurse turned radio/talk show host sex educator. And she was a naughty old lady who told it to you straight, with humor, with frank honesty.

I can vividly remember being a young teenager and watching Sue Johanson demonstrate how to use your hands while giving a blowjob or how you could use a vibrating toothbrush for a little clitoral stimulation. How to make your own DIY fleshlight with bubble wrap or her hilarious responses and cheeky eyebrows to absurd questions about sex and sexuality.

I really feel like I was truly blessed to be a younger person coming up in the times of Talk Sex and other programming like Fridays Without Borders. I feel like so much of it shaped the sexual being I am today. I feel bad for all the people that never got to experience these things.

One of the most interesting parts of this documentary, which I had never thought about before, is how the internet changed the landscape for Sue Johanson and essentially ended her career as a sex educator. Watching her, you'd never really think of her as prudish or close-minded or just not fully aware but the internet and what it grew into really changed the whole thing for her. They showed a segment, which I hadn't seen before, where she's taking questions and her information is bad and her response isn't helpful and I was just surprised by it.

Also, obsessed with the other people in this documentary. Dan Savage, the gay male Sue for the 21st century. Margaret Cho, who I will always remember best telling a story, "I'm gonna wash yer vagina!". And Nina freaking Hartley - we stan hard! It was great to hear their perspectives on the phenomenon that was Sue Johanson.
