t this point I have accounts on many different social medias. Regardless of what year or what is going on any given social media platform, I immediately throw down my basic formula for testing content. I started doing this formula about five years ago once I began noticing a common pattern among my social media accounts.

This process is supposed to be boring. Mindless. Emotionally unattached. You're treating your content like an experiment. While also, if you can't detach, fine. Do it anyway the best you can emotionally handle.

Definition First:

Beginners = you don't know yet what your audience likes.

Experienced = you already have at least two pieces of content that has done well on at least two platforms, and they're different from each other in pose or angle.

Beginners:

  1. Look up 1โ€“5 creators you admire on the platform. Note hashtags, music, angles, how hot the content is, engagement levels. One creator is genuinely fine. This is about speed, not perfection.

  2. Find 5โ€“10 pieces of your own content that feel like they fit that vibe. Post it all at once. Throw on some music and hashtags, doesn't matter what. Walk away for a couple days.

  3. Come back, scroll the FYP, see what you like and hate. Post more as it occurs to you randomly. Ten one day, one the next, whatever. Volume over timing at this stage.

  4. After a week, check stats on everything. Something pulling even slightly ahead? Seven likes vs five likes is still data. It counts.

  5. Keep posting, keep scrolling, keep noting patterns. Do this until something clearly breaks away from the pack.

  6. When it does, make more of that! Refine the nuances. Test poses. Take notes.

Note: You're throwing spaghetti at the wall. That's the strategy. On a small account "viral" might be 100 likes when your average is 10. What is your minimum number definition of a viral? Is your goal small community or follower count on this platform? Adjust your expectations to the bloom of your blossoming content garden.

Experienced

  1. Pull your best content from every other platform and organize it by pose and angle.

  2. Quickly check 1โ€“5 creators you admire. What are they hashtagging, how hot is their content, what's getting engagement.

  3. Dump all of it onto the new platform. Log the fuck off. Come back in a week.

  4. Check stats. Is your proven content performing? If something should be working and isn't, is it too hot for this platform? Not hot enough? Wrong format entirely?

  5. Scroll the FYP and compare to what you know from other platforms. Do you grow here from interaction, algorithm, or hashtags? Post two similar pieces of content and interact heavily on one, does it move the needle?

  6. Ask people in your circle what they've noticed. Someone always knows something. Begin refining your content and strategy more and more to match the vibe of the platform.

Note: Viral is still relative to your account size and where you are in building. I handwrite notes when I'm actively experimenting, use Evernote for anything I want to keep, and Airtable when I'm really trying to crack a pattern. Use whatever you'll actually stay consistent with.

TL;DR: volume posting + detachment + pattern recognition
