I ended up seeing “Furiosa” in IMAX which I think was maybe a mistake on my end - I went into the film expecting a sort of "new action set piece every couple minutes" experience like “Mad Max: Fury Road,” but “Furiosa” isn't really that. It’s still got some great set pieces, but a lot more of the scenes are quieter and less in your face, which is an interesting stylistic changeup from “Fury Road” and works at certain times, but isn't exactly what I pay IMAX ticket prices for. I also found a lot of the expanded world building to not really add to my enjoyment of the "Mad Max Cinematic Universe," as I never really felt like I needed answers to a number of the questions “Furiosa” sets out to answer. Honestly, my main cinematic point of comparison here feels like “Monsters University” (no insult intended), just in the sense that I spent the majority of the runtime kind of wondering why the movie existed; it felt a bit like a prequel for the sake of having a prequel. But by no means is “Furiosa” a bad movie - perhaps a bit too long, but an enjoyable watch nonetheless. Maybe just adjust your expectations a little from “Fury Road.”
