The series that started it all; you rarely hear “Dragon Ball” get brought up in comparison to its younger brother “Dragon Ball Z” these days, and I think that's because “Dragon Ball” as a series is much harder to pin down, at least until later chapters. By the beginning of “Dragon Ball Z” Akira Toriyama’s storytelling had already hit its stride, but here the series still contains a lot of sillier elements that were present in his previous series, “Dr. Slump.” This chapter here is a fine enough start to the adventure, as Goku and Bulma meet and decide to go on a quest to collect the Dragon Balls together, but it's not exciting right out the gate like “Dragon Ball Z” is - in fact, the chapter has an almost fairy tale like feeling to it as Goku, the sheltered forest boy, meets Bulma, the high tech city girl, and has to enter and learn about the modern world with her. But a fun start, a real whimsical beginning to the whole storied series.
