๐ฃ FRESH START!
This thread is for those with little to no knowledge of 3D modelling or sculpting.
The goal is to get you confortable navigating the interface of popular 3D software, and give you enough tools to create simple projects!
Resources directed primarily for character creation in 3D.
Pick resources that fit your learning style, instead of brute forcing learning in a way you don't enjoy - that's why I tried including multiple options in each topic for you to pick from!
Before you start, some 3D concepts (software agnostic!) that will be helpful to be familiarized with.
Don't get too stressed about memorizing everything, we will go through all of them in other resouces ahead. But things will become easier if you go in with these concepts already understood.
3D Concepts and Terminology

INTRODUCTION
These are some basic concepts and terminology that are going to be helpful to know before starting to use 3D software. Not a deep dive for now, just useful to know that they exist.
3D Space
- Composed of 3 axis (X,Y and Z axis)
- Vertices will be located by coordinates on the 3D space (X,Y and Z)
- Connected vertices will make a 3D model
Polygons / Mesh
- 3D meshes are composed of 2D polygons: faces, edges and vertices
- Faces can be tris (3 sides), quads (4 sides), and N-gons (5 or more sides)
- N-gons can cause issues when animating, subdividing or shading
Loops
- Group of edges or faces going around the model (not necessarily in a perfect circle)
- Well positioned loops can be useful for supporting areas of importance on your model, for better deformation, etc.
- A loop cut is slicing a mesh across, adding a new loop around it
Topology
- Organization of faces, edges and vertices across the model
- "Good" and "optimal" topology will depend on what's the model being used for
Curves
- Lines connected between two control points with curvature handles
- Same concept as curves in vector-based software (ex.: Illustrator)
Subdivision Surface
- Subdivide: divide faces into 4 smaller parts, for higher resolution geometry
- Subdivision Surface: optionally, also interpolates between edges of your model, creating a smoother, rounder surface
- Usually comes in the form of non-destructive modifiers, meaning you can still have access to and edit the original geometry
- For good results with Subdivision, you'll need a clean topology
- In modern 3D film animation, animators will often work on a "low-poly" character, and then "smooth them out" with Subdivision
Normals
- The mathematical direction a face or vertex is facing
- Tells the software which side is the "inside" and "outside", and how light should reflect on the model
- Really important for shading, optimization, physics simulation, etc.
- A common issue you might come across is a face with inverted normals, meaning the face is facing the wrong way in 3D, messing up the calculation of things such as lighting.
Pivot / Origin Points
- Every 3D model has an origin point which indicates where the model is located in the 3D Space
- Transform operations such as Move, Scale and Rotate will be applied to the pivot point as numerical values (ex.: a Scale Transform of 2 would mean the model is now twice its size)
- Operations such as mirroring objects will rely on the origin point as reference
Modelling vs Sculpting
- Modelling: creating models by manipulating individual polygons, with a higher focus on topology and edge loops. Usually contains lower poly counts, more suitable for animation
- Sculpting: creating models by using brushes to push and pull large chunks of vertices, similar to clay sculpting. More suitable for organic and denser models. Shares a lot of similarities with digital painting workflows.
- A lot of the times you'll need to convert your high-poly sculptures into low-poly models before you can use it for things such as animation and UV texturing. This process is called retopology
UVs
- A common method of texturing models involves taking all the faces of your 3D model and flattening them into a 2D image. This process is called UV Unwrapping.
Manifold and non-manifold geometry
- Manifold geometry: watertight meshes, meaning all edges are connected to only 2 faces, and there's a clear distinction between "outside" and "inside" the model. Meaning no "floating" edges, holes in the geometry, or multiple separate areas that could be considered "inside"
- Non-manifold geometry: mesh either has a edge connected to 3 or more faces, holes, or 2 faces occupying the same spot
- Non-manifold geometry can cause issues with 3D-printing, shading, remeshing or animation

Which Software Should I Learn?
There's not a simple right and wrong answer, as you'd expect.
Different softwares will serve different needs. And depending on your workflow, a lot of times you'll end up mixing and matching softwares anyways.
Rather, you should know the pros and cons of each software, and learn them based on your goals and needs.
If you're wondering, recently I've been using:
- Zbrush for sculpting
- Marvelous Designer for cloth simulation
- Blender for retopology, UV's, rigging, lighting, render
- Substance Painter for texturing
Also, just to make it clear. Learning 3D software is going to be complicated. There's no easy solution around it, and the software you choose won't make too much of a difference in how long it takes to grasp the fundamentals.
GENERAL
BLENDER
๐ข Free and open source
"This is the biggest "selling" point of Blender, and a decider for many on what software to start learning. Just download the latest version of Blender and see if 3D interests you, no strings attached!
When Adobe was donating funds to the Blender Foundation, I remember seeing people scared about Blender's future. Blender CANNOT be ruined by big companies due to their open source code. They're not gonna buy Blender Corporation and turn it to a subscription based software, the source code is out there on the internet forever."
๐ข Swiss knife of 3D tools
"Covers almost all your creative needs (to varying degrees of competency). It has tools for: modelling, sculpting, texturing, animation, VFX, simulation, rendering, compositing. Nowadays I just use Blender for editing non-3D videos, that's how versatile it is."
๐ข Massive amount of learning resources
"Millions of free & paid learning resources online for everything it has to offer, due to it's massive community"
๐ก Constant updates changing fundamentals of the software
"This is a positive for some and a negative for others. I personally love all the content being added to Blender multiple times a year, but I have seen people being turned off by things constantly changing and older tutorials being rendered useless. It can definitively be overwhelming for people learning the software."
๐ก Jack of all trades...master of none
"Besides maybe modelling (and that's depending on who you ask), all the Blender features I listed above are probably better and more fleshed out on other specialized software. Some areas of Blender are still particularly lacking, like simulation and texturing. Still very convenient to have everything bundled together in one tool, but something to keep in mind."
๐ด
MAYA
๐ข Still industry standard
"The debate on "industry-standard" is a little complicated, but it is fair to say that knowing Maya will open a lot of doors to you if you're planning to enter the creative industry."
๐ข Autodesk student license
"Depending on your school, you might have a pretty generous student access to all Autodesk tools, Maya included."
