The consequences of folding into race defined communities
o Dedrick Flynn just did a set on Kill Tony, I genuinely found it funny, he confirmed a racial stereotype that he can't swim, he confirmed a racial stereotype that Black People don't get in ground/ 8 feet swimming pools, he confirmed a racial stereotype that not only do Black People get above ground/ 3 feet swimming pools but every time there's a Pool Party and there's an above ground attached to the in ground all the Black People crowd out the above ground, that was an amazing set and all he did was confirm racial stereotypes
Unfortunately Dedrick's set bombed hard but like I already said I not only found it funny but also insightful
Let's go back to just a few years ago, Kam Patterson did a set on Black People actually having fried chicken and grape/ orange soda at family gatherings and everyone thought that was funny
Genuinely not understanding the double standard
I think what's happening here is that Kam Patterson got first mover's rights and subsequently a pass, fast forward to Dedrick Flynn trying to make it in Stand Up Comedy and all of a sudden simply confirming Black Stereotypes is not funny
This is why there are separate comedy spaces, why do you think Chocolate Sundaes in California even exists, to give African American Comedians who can't step out of that Black Community Monoculture a chance
Kill Tony is not mainstream but look at what happens when someone can't mentally gentrify themselves and appeal to a mass audience tries to do just that, appeal to a real audience and not a hyper curated Black Community, there's backlash
Why do you think Chocolate Sundaes or the Comedy Sasquatch, which is basically Chocolate Sundaes all over again but more inconspicuous about it even exists
It's because that Black Community/ Black Family Gathering Persona doesn't bode well with a mainstream audience
Do you know why Rudy Frasier created BlackSky, he was literally asked to
He was literally asked to create an Instance just for African American Users on BlueSky
He wasn't doing anything wrong it's just that he was asked to move his African American centric content over to another Instance and he was welcome to build one of his own
It's not actually a self perpetuating loop, not all African Americans get thrown into BlackSky or Chocolate Sundaes or any other equivalent depending on what the context is
Those niche communities are for those who can't self gentrify, if they can't escape that Black Family Gathering persona then the mainstream audience doesn't want them
That's why BlackSky and Chocolate Sundaes and whatever other equivalent exists
Here's my take, both sides are at fault here, when you become submissive and concede and fold into a race defined community, you become an even bigger target for racism than you already are
Adversely we simply have to be more tolerant, how can somebody self gentrify when we're not giving them the opportunity to appeal to a mainstream audience in the first place
Why are we so harsh on people who are stuck in Monoculture or are late to conform? Why are we harsh on the brave people who are trying to appeal to a mainstream audience even when they're stuck in race defined Monoculture?
