n August 13, 2026, The Washington Free Beacon reported that Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed had, in 2023, compared bacon to plutonium.

Back in college, a friend and I were talking to a young woman who was pontificating about politics. She was explaining why she opposed nuclear energy (I doubt anyone had asked). Her explanation included the phrase “impregnating the Earth.” That phrase triggered a response from my friend:

Nuclear babies!

I laughed. She didn’t laugh.

Mr. El-Sayed’s comparison of bacon to plutonium reminded me of the nuclear babies. I will note that while my friend who dropped the magnificent nuclear babies line is Jewish, he loves bacon more than anyone I know. If bacon is plutonium, I am reasonably confident that he would support making plutonium a part of a well-balanced breakfast.
