The USMNT forgets how to play, and thoughts on Clerks (1994).
almost have nothing to say about the US Men's National Team at this point. Or, rather, I have nothing to say that hasn't been said by a zillion other commentators. There are simply too many things wrong with this team, with the national federation, with the MLS, and with the talent pipeline. Of course we were going to fail, but I didn't expect it to be such a failure, I guess, including a really deeply nationally-embarrasing boneheaded error by my club's keeper.
Oh, and that was sandwiched in between England and Mexico played an all-time heater of a match, and Argentina scoring three times in fourteen minutes to beat Egypt (at this point I think we just hand Messi & Co. the trophy and give everyone else a week or two off—unless the French or Spanish want to do something about it).
The Watchlist
Clerks (1994)
There are brief—brief—moments where I can see through the faded window of other people's recollections and understand that this felt somehow revolutionary and new. I, however, do not feel this way. Absent a few quippy lines and an overhanging sense of Gen-X malaise, this thing is turgid. It's a slog. There's something creatively fulfilling about seeing a snapshot of a particular people in a particular place in a particular time, but that doesn't detract from the fact that there are very few parts of this movie that feel well-paced.
1776 (1972)
It's a perfectly cromulent movie musical. I, however, have seen this film once a year since I was a baby, so my opinions of it are both simple (I think it's perfectly fine if overly wedded to the notion of The Founders as Important dudes—they are, but they were also horny vagrants and swindlers and idealists making deals and getting shitfaced in the middle of the day) and deeply specific (there's something about how Ken Howard shouts "alone" in "But, Mr. Adams" that I find delicious).
TENET (2020)
Look, is it stupid to drag your very lovely and kind fiancée to a 9pm 70mm screening of an incomprehensible movie nobody remembers because it got buried during COVID lockdowns by Warner Bros.? No. Did the projector break three separate times, melting a few frames of Kenneth Branagh's stupid face doing his stupid Russian accent in the process? Yes. Was it a blast? Hell yeah! Sit back and enjoy John David Washington making moon eyes at Elizabeth Debicki while Bobby Pats makes moon eyes at both of them while the Ludwig score goes crazy and birds fly backwards and shit!! Don't try to understand it—feel it!!!
