If I blocked you

f you’re reading this you might be confused by or worried about finding out I’ve blocked you on a social media platform.

I want you to know that I block extremely liberally at any hint that I might not enjoy a social media interaction with an account. I do it several times per day. I find it necessary to make social media less harmful to my mental health in today’s polarized environment, while maintaining a professional account with 50k followers.

I almost certainly don’t remember why I blocked you. It was probably nothing egregious, maybe I just didn’t like the vibe of a reply I saw.

It is not a personal judgement, and I won’t hold it against you in other contexts or venues. You’re still welcome to email me, ping me on GitHub,*1 and say hi at a conference. I have terrible memory anyway, so I couldn’t associate this thing with you if I tried, and I apologize if I didn’t remember we interacted in the past before blocking you.

I invite you not to worry or think much about it. I didn’t. But if it’s important to you, email me and I’ll unblock you: again, this is not a big deal to me.

  1. If I blocked you on GitHub, then you did fuck up, you’re one of a very few, and you probably should think about why that happened.
