The Ultimate Kobo & Unraid Home Library Guide

My new Kobo came and of course I had to overthink things and create entire automated systems around it.

1. The "Aha!" Moment: What I Discovered

The biggest discovery was that the "industry standard" (Calibre) is overkill, and a headache, for simple server hosting. Enter:

Grimmory (formerly BookLore): A lightweight, self-hosted library server designed for the modern era. Unlike Calibre, it focuses on a clean web UI and native device integration rather than a desktop-app-in-a-browser experience.

What’s great about Grimmory, and the Kobo, you can simply redirect the Kobo's built-in api_endpoint to point at your own server.

2. The Build: What I Implemented

1. Sourcing (LazyLibrarian):
   • Configured to target EPUB only to avoid junk files (SVG/PDF).
   • Integrated Usenet Indexers (for automation) and explored Annas Archive/Libgen (for coverage).
2. Management (Grimmory on Unraid):
   • Deployed via Docker on Unraid.
   • Connected to a MariaDB database (using the correct jdbc:mariadb string).
   • Set up a dedicated BookDrop folder to separate "incoming" books from the "permanent" library.
   • Configured Allowed Formats to strip out non-book files (like SVGs) and enabled Server-Side KEPUB Conversion for the best Kobo reading experience.
3. Delivery (The Native Sync):
   • Bypassed the need for NickelMenu/KoboOPDS.
   • Edited the .kobo/Kobo/Kobo eReader.conf file to rewrite the api_endpoint to the Grimmory server token.
4. The Hardware (Kobo):
   • Now receives books wirelessly via the native "Sync" button, formatted as KEPUBs for better performance.

3. What Folks Need to Know

• The Calibre Trap: Don't feel forced into Calibre. If you just want a server that feeds your Kobo, look at Grimmory/BookLore first.
• Config File Gotchas:
  1. On macOS, remember to use Cmd + Shift + . to see hidden folders like .kobo.
  2. The Kobo eReader.conf file is the "skeleton key" for Kobo customization.
• Automation Reality Check:
  1. Usenet for Books: It's hit-or-miss. Don't rely on it solely; supplement it with direct downloads.
  2. The "Paywall" of Automation: To truly automate Annas Archive in LazyLibrarian, you need a paid membership for the API key. The free tier is for manual browser use only.
• Format Discipline: Always set your "Allowed Formats" early. If you don't, your library will quickly fill with cover art (SVGs) and metadata files.
• Privacy & Safety: Stick to HTTP direct downloads for ebooks; avoid torrenting unless using a trusted VPN, as P2P is the only real area where end-users see legal "trolls."
