I think I've figured out what I'm going to use this for
did say in my first post that I might use this to talk about the types of things I used Tumblr for previously. But when I wrote that, I basically forgot what I used Tumblr for between opening the account in 2009 through to 2012. That was when I took an unintentended 8 year hiatus ending in 2020. At that point, I began using it for more serious, more angry; but still somewhat short and informal posts. Things that I felt were too informal for my serious blog; but too long to post on Twitter (now Bluesky). The most recent post I made on there was in 2023, and that was about the climate crisis, which is my default topic.
I want to try using this account to go back to what I used to do for those 4 years or so. I might have deleted some posts because I deemed them to be too cringe when I looked back at them a while back. I honestly can’t remember. I know I have a lot of private posts on there, because while I find a lot of them ridiculous now, I also like to look back and appreciate how much I’ve learned and changed over the years.
I used to do simple things like share cool videos I liked on YouTube of things like extreme sports. I used to comment on interesting or weird articles I saw, that weren’t that serious compared to what I talk about now. There was a lot about video games and talk about sports and particularly F1 and other motorsports, that I was obsessed with at that time. There was a lot of technology news too. But very niche kinds of stuff that I basically never talk about now. I often feel like I can’t talk about fun things because my blog and my Bluesky account are often so serious. I mean I do occasionally post articles about Formula E on Bluesky. But I only really do that because The Race (motorsport news website) makes you pay to comment on articles!
I want to do more of all of that here. Talk about what I’m playing. Talk about niche things like what I think about a new season release in Skate 4 for example. Or what I make of the current state of the gaming world. Talk about some cool tech that I’m interested in. And not from my usual perspective of being socialist and a climate justice advocate.
It’s really tough for me to talk about fun things when the world is so broken, but I’m going to try to. For my own mental health if nothing else.
I don’t know if I’ll go back to commenting on things quite so superficial and pointless as the new design of a cycling team’s kit for the new season; or similar things I’ve blogged about in the past 16 or so years on Tumblr. But I’ll see what I can do.
