A visit to Montgomery's Farm Museum open house during America's 250th birthday year.
t’s a big birthday year for the USA. 250 years. Toddler years, when compared with everywhere else in the world outside the Americas. It’s a big year if you happen to live in one of the original thirteen colonies, too. New Jersey is one of those. And it’s an even bigger deal if you live in one of the towns that played a role in the Revolutionary War. George Washington marched through this bit of New Jersey; he wintered in Rockingham, a spot of land just a short bicycle ride from where I live.

In June, The Van Harlingen Historical Society held an open house at the Montgomery Farm Museum. I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I was disappointed: some historic farm equipment in a historic barn, a 1776 flag. Eh. I struck up a conversation with some of the organisers, though, and that was fun. I stayed too long.
