Kumamoto Castle in Kumamoto on Kyushu is considered one of the three premier castles in Japan, along with Himeji Castle and Matsumoto Castle.

his photo was taken while climbing to the main castle keep in 2014. I was incredibly lucky to be able to see the castle before it was severely damaged during an earthquake in April 2016. The interior of the castle keep was re-opened to the public in 2021, but major repair works are expected to continue on the castle grounds until around 2042.
