Finding New Map Apps to Find My Way (And Keep My Data Free)

educing my reliance on corporate apps has been a journey, and finding a robust replacement for mapping services was one of the biggest hurdles. I rely on maps daily! For simple directions, checking public transit routes, or gathering basic info on local businesses (hours, websites).
My exploration led me to CoMaps. While I’ve used it before, my recent trip proved its value tenfold. Being able to download map data locally meant reliable navigation without needing constant mobile data. A true lifesaver for exploring unfamiliar areas!
To build on that discovery, I utilized Nextcloud Maps, with companion mobile app Nextcloud Maps Geobookmarks, to save my favorite visited spots. It was a pleasant surprise how well this feature worked; having a centralized, customizable view of my travels is incredibly satisfying.
I’m genuinely excited by the functionality these open-source, community data driven, tools offer. This experience has naturally set my sights on contributing data back to OpenStreetMap. If I’ve been using these apps to find information, I want to help build and enrich that map for everyone else!
