York’s naked bike ride is a “protest against car culture” and the dangers faced by cyclists – but some people have “become less tolerant” to the unusual event in recent years, writes John Cossham who has been involved with the event – as both organiser and participant – for almost 20 years.
THE World Naked Bike Ride has been going for over 20 years worldwide, as a protest against car culture and the dangers that cyclists face when getting from A to B. It has also become a celebration of the human body, one of which we all have, and should not feel ashamed of or be made to feel ashamed of – and has become a regular fixture in the ‘naturist’ calendar. As it’s become clearer that climate change is an existential threat to many species and ecosystems on earth, cycling is increasingly seen as an eco-friendly alternative to fossil-fuelled transport, so the protest also celebrates zero-carbon travel.
The York ride started 20 years ago and for most of that time has been a joyous and fun event, supported by the police who share our concerns about cyclist safety – many of them are cyclists and none of them enjoy going to deal with the results of a collision between a lump of metal weighing hundreds or thousands of kilos and travelling at speed, and a vulnerable body protected only by thin clothing.
However over the past few years some people have become less tolerant, and appear to have confused non-sexual nudity with pornography and sexual offences…
