On simplicity:

I have about 14 days to configure my laptop to be the idea coding machine for myself. As it stands, It currently is running Arch linux with MATE. I’ve got both “Code – OSS” on it and neovim/nvchad.

I’d really like to build my own *nix distro following the suckless philosophy. If I was only doing c/c++ I’d run Plan9 or something but I’m not. The BSD’s don’t play well with this laptop and I’m sick of cooking my legs with it. So I’m back on linux. Again. For the millionth fucking time.

Is it too much to ask for some real fucking UNIX that works on this god-forsaken laptop? Why (WHY?!? she repeats for emphasis) is this thing casually roasting itself at 85C just sitting at a desktop?

[sigh]

I am extremely dissatisfied with today’s operating systems.

I should just buy a fuckin mac. BUT I DONT WANT ONE.

So If I consider KISS and Suckless philosophies, I’m left with Gentoo/runit/Musl or Void/Musl. Void is nice. Actually, void is fuckin primo, but I can’t connect to the TLS network at school with it because it’s missing some feature that is (apparently) completely required and (apparently) just simply can’t exist in the Musl ecosystem.

So what now?

Do I fork musl-libc and port the feature? No because the feature isn’t there because it’s not ‘correct’, and because it isn’t suckless. No SUCK in the code. Suck is bad.

Do I find the feature and figure out how to make it “correct” and “Free of suck” then package it as a library? I think this is the better option between the two, but likely harder as well. I suppose nothing worth doing is easy.

I’ve got an app I’m designing right now.

Dad had the idea, it’s a good idea too. I think I understand the necessary parts well enough to do it all without becoming a disgusting data-mining operation too. p2p networking, local DBs, no servers, bootstrap from publicly available data.

I don’t want to make something malicious. I don’t want to push spyware out into the world. I wanna make good things. I don’t wanna make things that suck. Enshittification is alive and well in the programming world. I for one won’t stand for it.
