Spoilers Ahead for “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma”

Last night my partner took me to see “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma”. Its a autoparodic slasher film that addresses much of the queerphobia of it’s forebears in a comedic fashion. It serves as a hokey bloodbath revenge fantasy for anyone who has ever experienced firsthand the utter horseshit that is transphobia. It also, is a really heartwarming lesbian age-gap romantic comedy with genuine takes on kink and sexual repression.

Jane Shoenbrun (Creator of I Saw the TV Glow) tells the story of Kris Williams, an up and coming indie director who’s been handed a dead franchise and told to revive it, and Billie Presley, the “final girl” from the first film in the franchise.

From the very beginning of the film, we’re handed trope after trope of the slasher-fic genre in a magnificently self-aware fashion. The stop for candy at the small town gas station. The GPS going off the road. The hapless lead wandering into the abandoned sleep-away camp. At 10 minutes in, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is going to be “just another slasher”.

By then end of the film, I found myself resonating deeply with the BBEG, and lusting for a “Little Death” of my own.
