August 4 Primary Election: What Changes Starting July 21

Starting July 21, Michigan voters who need to register or update their address for the August 4 Primary Election must do so in person at their city or township clerk’s office with proof of residency. July 21 is also the last day coalition partners recommend that most voters return an absentee ballot by mail before switching to an in-person return option or secure drop box.

Oakland County Becomes Fifth Michigan County to Oppose Documentary Proof of Citizenship Ballot Initiative

The Oakland County Board of Commissioners voted 11-6 to oppose a proposed ballot initiative that would require additional citizenship documents to register to vote and eliminate the current option to register using a driver’s license. Oakland is the fifth Michigan county to pass a resolution opposing the proposal, and community members can help bring similar resolutions to more cities, townships, and counties.

The federal SAVE America Act is not currently law, but similar documentary proof of citizenship proposals are moving forward in Michigan and other states. For a Michigan voter who needs to obtain citizenship and name-change documents, the cost could reach $200 to $230 or more, not including transportation, childcare, or lost wages.
