Really hoping my photo lab gets my order done today, I want to buy myself some camera stuff for my birthday but this requires knowing: does my new-to-me camera actually work

In the age of LLMs it is desperately important to be able to mute blogs and filter websites.

About Me
Jul 31, 2026
I’m a fortysomething government analyst living in Sacramento, California with my husband and two small children. sameoldstory was my Twitter handle long ago and it has stuck with me as an online name. I also use devilenvogue some places. My real name is Brittany. The things I post about are: parenting, politics, chess, knitting, crochet, self-hosted software, books I’ve read, movies I’m watching, and I’ve recently gotten into film photography.

I'm definitely a homelabber now.

I've recently learned that my husband was impressed by my hard drive replacement the other weekend, which is pretty cool. It was not a difficult thing to do, except for the screw placement thing I already complained about (and at length, offline), but it did take me a number or hours and it seems to be fairly wizardy to non-computer people. Personally it's more that I always felt like kind of an idiot for not knowing more about this stuff since computers impact us all so much, every day, so I'm ...

Practicing not fighting on the Internet.
May 19, 2026
It doesn't happen often, but sometimes somebody makes a post here on Bear Blog that I totally hate. Maybe I think their analysis of politics is not very good, or they're making some harsh judgements about a field of work or study they (in my estimation) don't really understand. Maybe they're painting with a very broad brush and their worldview is just too limited or depressed to really back up their statements (in my opinion). Since this is a social network of a sort, it is very tempting to make...

I'm Old, and honestly think you should consider holding onto your social media accounts even if you don't want to use them anymore.

I think the Indieweb is a super interesting project and it definitely does resemble the Internet I spent my childhood and teenage years on more (1997 - 2007, let's say). I'm trying to spend more time on this and less time on conventional social media, which is what the Internet is for most people. But for a lot of people, that social media is where they spent their childhoods on and though the companies are definitely evil, your content isn't and I do wonder if people might someday regret totall...

What's the point of having a low traffic blog?
Feb 16, 2026
I don't really mean what's the point judgmentally, though it's probably not possible to not sound a little judgmental, because I'm asking why I am (and maybe you are) bothering with something here. There are two clear alternatives to the public blog, and they're both easier: social media (where my stuff will definitely get read by more people), or just keeping thoughts and ideas privately on my computer or in my diary (where I really would be free to write anything I wanted). There almost is no ...
