The shadow copy was the wrong layer
Last week I set out to build two companion WordPress plugins. One would turn PDF attachments into markdown so AI agents could read them. The other would run a local vision model over every image and write a description an agent could use. Generally speaking, agents can't read PDFs or images well (although they're getting...

“On Access Trauma,” Accessibility, and Interdependance
I just wanted to shout out the Sightless Scribbles blog post, “On Access Trauma”. I think it offers a good glimpse into everyday things people with different abilities have to deal with. For instance, I had no idea that PDFs are often inaccessible.

Blogging with Magic Unicode: Simple Doesn't Have to Mean Boring!
You don't need bloat. You can use CSS variables and Unicode symbols to add visual personality to your personal website while keeping it minimal, accessible, and fast-loading. Includes a reference of symbol sets (celestial, elemental, occult, card suits, chess, zodiac, and more) with colour examples using the Gruvbox palette.

Progressively enhancing Grid Lanes
This post is a follow-up on my previous post. I was wondering whether it's safe to use Grid Lanes today. I came up with a solution I find okay, but there is a caveat.

Your Grid Lanes will likely fail WCAG 2.4.3
I saw a great introduction to CSS Grid Lanes, aka Masonry Layouts, by Patrick Brosset at CSS Day 2026. I liked the versatility of its use cases, but I was also concerned that it's inaccessible by default.

Why Make Your Website Accessible, Anyways?
Web accessibility isn't compliance theatre or checking off a list. It's about designing for everyone. Exploring the curb cut effect, why disability is more common than we think, and practical steps to make your website usable by as many people as possible.

Here are the Switch 2 games from the Access-Ability Showcase
In amongst the chaos of Summer Game Fest season (for lack of a better term) I wanted to shine a light on the ongoing efforts of Laura Kate Dale and her Access-Ability Showcase. There's a dizzying amount of presentations hosted during the next week or two, and this one is unique in that it dials...

Stay Away From Accessibility Overlays
Accessibility overlays are poor solutions to accessibility issues and in the majority of cases, inflict more problems than they solve. They don't provide legal protection and overall harm the usability of websites. They should not be used and must be avoided, with focus instead being placed on addressing the core problems.

Progressive enhancement as a benefit of CSS Nesting
Something I knew is that in browser that support CSS nesting you can nest @media queries inside of other CSS declarations. What I only fully grasped a few days ago is how well this works for progressive enhancement. I've happily used (and wrote about) CSS and @media nesting for about six years now. Primarily through...
