iOS 16+ List Row Separators
While using Claude to write some new SwiftUI code, I spent a disappointing amount of time yesterday trying to figure out why the separators between my List rows didn’t align consistently on the left, and flowed all the way off the right of my screen. Sadly, the LLM kept going in loops, and didn’t know...

Debugging a Module Resolution Problem in Node
While trying to run my app on Node, I got the uncaught exception: Which obviously didn’t do much to tell me what imports were broken. (This project has a couple of different languages compiling down to javascript, so this ambiguous error may belong to my unique concoction of config files) To debug it, I enabled...

Cannot find named export
I just got this error when trying to import a module from Node: But it did provide that export! thing was a package I made that had a mapping in its packages json.exports from “otherthing” to “otherthing.ts” and “otherthing.ts” for sure exported “blah”. Notice that I’m using node --import=tsx, and not ts-node. I’m not sure...

Debugging Flaky Tests
Oh no, the tests are failing. Wait, now they aren’t. Wait, only when I re-run the test it works. Wait, I just ran it from scratch and it worked this time! Uuugh, every time I run the failing test in isolation it works. EVERY time. But when I run it in context it sometimes fails....

Are they the same object?
While debugging I needed to know if two references in two separate parts of my codebase were pointing to the same object in memory. According to my searching, there isn’t a way to print out memory addresses of data in Javascript (without using special V8 debugging expressions). But there’s a way to find the answer...

Whoops, we called that API twice
In one of my codebases at work we have a custom React hook for rendering the result of a promise: At first blush this may seem fine. This function takes a promise object, sets it on state, and then fires a useEffect to register a callback that updates component state with the result of the...

VSCode deleting my code
VSCode has been automatically deleting unreachable code for me. Seems like that’d be nice, but it really isn’t most of the time. I often want to deliberately make code unreachable while in the middle of development so that I can test a specific branch. When I go to do that and VS Code deletes half...

Typescript in Node and the Client
Hey! Another one for the debug journal. We’re adding some back-end endpoints using Express.js to our Typescript/React front-end. So I threw together a server.ts file and tried to run it with ts-node. But nope: Yeah, imports. We’re not yet in the future where require is gone and everything just works. But that’s alright, someone from...

On creating a development build of the Expo client
I finally reached the point in development where it was time to add custom native code to a project and try out Expo’s development builds feature. I followed a YouTube video and the official Expo docs to make a build for my project, but was confused when the build finished and there was no “install”...

Kotlin Async Gotcha
Today I was hacking on a project with Ktor, and wanting to execute two operations in parallel, which can be done using the async function available on a CoroutineContext: But the compiler highlights the async calls and shows me this error: As far as I can tell, it’s saying that the type of the block...

React Native Async Trouble
This is a #DebugJournal post, which means you’re reading the notes I took in real-time while debugging the issue. It won’t read like a nicely put together tutorial, more like a boring field-journal. Multiple times now I’ve come to situations where React Native just hangs up, and stops execution of a promise or generator-based function...

Installing SBT on an M1 Mac
Turns out it’s pretty simple when you do it the right way: https://stackoverflow.com/a/66464892/1037043 SDK Man is the way to go: And SBT should run without much trouble after that.

On Pagination and Sort Order
The Bug ???? We’ve been testing the next generation of our sync engine at Day One prior to public release, and we found a funny bug. We have an endpoint for fetching a big list of entries that have changed since the last fetch. This endpoint is also how a new phone with no content...

Don’t Make Me Tap Twice
I’ve started rough work on a new app for digital “morning baskets“. While I just used Expo when starting Storytime (another app I have in-progress), I decided to give the famous Ignite boilerplate from Infinite Red a chance. In short, it’s fantastic. In just a few days of side-work time I’ve almost completed a fully-functioning...

Debugging tricky parameterized types
Parameterized functions are fantastic. I’m talking about the functions that operate around some abstract piece of data, without doing anything that would require specific knowledge about that data. Take, for example, the following fictional function: Example The code above is designed to take an option of something, save it somewhere if the option contains data,...

React Native Animated Text
On Cyber Monday I sprang for William Candillon’s course on animation with React Native. I love his style. And I like how beautiful his examples are. However, it took me a few minutes to understand that he’s basing all his work on two libraries, Redash, and Reanimated. These tools are super powerful, and I’m off...

On media uploads, and annoying S3 APIs.
While working on Storytime Studio a couple of weeks ago I decided to upgrade my media uploading approach. I had started with the naive “I’ll just upload everything to the server and put it in a folder on the hard drive” approach, because that was simple. And it worked really well until I tried to...
