Permissioned Data Shapes: Feeds
Public feed generators drink from a firehose that permissioned data never enters, so a feed that includes space content has to become a syncer, keep a live model of who can see what, and serve a different skeleton to every viewer.

Reclaim Your Algorithm
This blog post has been a long time coming, so hydrate and get comfy, because we're diving into custom feeds today. Custom feeds give users the power to take back their algorithm and regain control over their social media experience. In this post, you'll learn what feeds are, how to create and use them, and why they're essential to getting the most out of Bluesky. Custom feeds are algorithms curated by community members and presented to users through the AT Protocol. By default, when you join Bl...

Game Publishers Move to Avoid GTA 6 (Rob Fahey)
Games Industry.biz (GIb) is a news website which covers the video game industry (surprise!). I have had GIb in my feed collection for a couple of years, and it has informed two NLJ articles in Provocative Out-Of-Context Headlines (GiB was responsible for the "context" rather than the headline) and AI Game Worlds and Humane Games....

Games Industry.biz (GIb) is a news website which covers the video game industry (surprise!). I have had GIb in my feed collection for a couple of years, and it has informed two NLJ articles in Provocative Out-Of-Context Headlines (GiB was responsible for the "context" rather than the headline) and AI Game Worlds and Humane Games. I usually do not think of GiB in terms of authors, but I decided to look into Rob Fahey after reading his report/opinion piece titled September becomes a pile-up as […]

Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 06-04-26
I missed two days of Pook-Emu Bee links. But it is not all bad: Now we have even more links from around the web to choose from. 1. Why I Built Bubbles (Ben at Bubbles Blog. March 26, 2026.) I've been an RSS obsessive for years. Hundreds of feeds, hand-picked one by one. But RSS...

But RSS only shows you sources you already know. New voices don't find you there. I added Bubbles' Daily Briefing to my feed reader to find new articles of interest. Nevertheless, I offer my qualified disagreement with the […]

Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 04-16-26
Today marks the 1957th anniversary of the death-by-suicide of the short-reigning Roman Emperor, Otho. I note this because my longest NLJ article, clocking it at more than 18,000 words, is about Otho. Fortunately, I also published some shorter Otho reading. But Otho aside, it is time for today's edition of Pook-Emu Bee links from around...

The Ever-Present Old Internet
Tyler Gaw published a good blog post titled The Old Internet is Still Here, noting that there are many personal websites and blogs worth reading on the web. As he put it, "they just got layered over by time." I agree with his post and encourage you to read it on his website. For those who are inclined, it is easy enough to use a feed reader to collect good websites from around the web (I suggest combining it with a read-it-later solution) instead of viewing the internet through the prism of […]

Re; Improve the RSS experience of your blog readers
Jatan, writing on his Journal J blog, offers good advice for webmasters who want to promote feed subscriptions for their projects. Having tried to pitch people on feeds in real life, I concur entirely with his assessment that explaining what feeds are and how one should use them are good ideas. I do this on NLJ with my Feed Directory (could use a refresher) and Feed introduction article. For people who are not inclined to write their own introduction to feeds, there are plenty around the web […]

Re; Offering RSS vs Newsletters
I came across an interesting take by Sebastian Sastre on why he uses an RSS feed instead of a newsletter for his blog. I agree with the feed-first position. However, I personally recommend using both. Recommend feeds as a first option but also have a newsletter (which is a publication unto itself beyond just sharing links). I use Buttondown, which is a good service (I think it avoids some of the pitfalls of the services Mr. Sastre notes) and also allows people to follow the newsletter itself […]

Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 03-03-26
I missed posting daily Pook-Emu Bee Links yesterday, but we are back in business on this rainy (in Brooklyn NYC, at least) March 3, 2026. Links from around the web 1. On veteran rival's turf, Nepal's rapper-turned-leader takes a swing at power. (Sahana Bajracharya for Reuters. March 2, 2026.) Out with the communists and in with the rappers in Nepal? We will find out on March 5, 2026. 2. Houthis express solidarity with Iran but do not launch retaliatory attacks—yet. (Bridget Toomey for […]

Remembering to Post to Pixelfed
I have a Pixelfed account that I use to share better quality versions of photos I post to New Leaf Journal (and more rarely this site). Back in 2021, I published an article about how to follow my Pixelfed account using its ATOM feed. It did "well" when I published it (one of my three most successful articles at the time was my 2020 Pixelfed review, which ended up having its best month in terms of page visits in January 2025, which inspired me to supersede it with a new Pixelfed review) and it […]
