Goodbye Ghost...
It wasn’t long ago that I decided to leave Ghost CMS, after receiving a polite email asking me not to use the Ghost name or anything derived from it. It all stemmed from a GitHub page where, throughout 2024 and 2025, I’d collected various resources for Ghost. It was a nice little project. It kept itself updated, hunting things down, testing code, and so on. All automated. But the fun came to an end, and the whole thing stayed on my mind. In July, I decided to leave Ghost. I knew what I was getting into:

What is Standard.Site? Next gen RSS
Think of this a bit like: advanced RSS where publishers can see number of subscribers a way to subscribe without cluttering your email inbox and also find the blogs of the people you already follow online. The subscriptions are tied to your Atmosphere account (your Bluesky account.) a schema or lexicon for those technically inclined...

Making a Ghost Blog a Valid standard.site Publication
This blog federates over ActivityPub through Ghost so Mastodon users can follow @index@subaud.io. standard.site is the counterpart for the AT Protocol side: a set of lexicons that describe a blog as records in an atproto repo, the same identity and data layer behind a Bluesky account. Anything that speaks the protocol can then follow the blog, recommend posts from it, and index it — follows and recommendations live as records in readers' own repos, the same way Bluesky follows do. I checked how

Building the Ghost MCP server
The last two posts here were about the skills in this plugin — one learns my writing voice from my published posts, the other revises a draft section by section. Neither can do anything without a way to reach Ghost: to read what I've already posted, create a draft, update one that's already up. That's the rest of the plugin, a small MCP server wrapping the Ghost Admin API. The server reaches Ghost with several tools create, read, update, images, and site info. Everything that takes judgment st

Ghost on AWS: Migrating to Ghost Pro While Keeping Custom Features
After four months of running a fully self-hosted Ghost CMS on AWS, I made a decision that might seem counterintuitive: I moved to Ghost Pro managed hosting. But here's the thing—I kept all the custom Lambda-powered features I'd built. This post documents that migration and explains why the hybrid approach makes sense. Why Move Away from Self-Hosted? Running Ghost on AWS taught me a lot about ECS, Aurora Serverless, and CloudFront configuration. The infrastructure worked well. Posts publishe

Ghost on AWS: Automated Weekly Digest Newsletters
Ghost CMS provides excellent newsletter capabilities, but lacks a built-in way to automatically send weekly digest emails summarizing recent posts. Building this feature requires understanding Ghost's Lexical editor format, coordinating between Ghost's Content and Admin APIs, and preventing duplicate sends. The solution uses EventBridge for scheduling, Lambda for processing, and DynamoDB for deduplication tracking. The system automatically collects posts from the past week, generates a newslet

Ghost on AWS: Migrating from Next.js MDX to Ghost
When we moved our Next.js MDX blog to Ghost on AWS, we needed to preserve Markdown editability in Ghost's editor. Most migration guides convert content to HTML, making it non-editable. Here's the complete migration tool we built to handle MDX files, images, and Ghost's Mobiledoc format. Understanding the Migration Challenge Our Next.js blog had MDX files with frontmatter metadata and images stored in public directories. Ghost uses a format called Mobiledoc for content storage. If you import

Ghost on AWS: Webhook Architecture and Time-Gated Content
Ghost CMS provides a powerful webhook system that enables deep customization beyond its built-in features. By building a centralized webhook router with AWS API Gateway and Lambda, you can create a scalable foundation for Ghost integrations. This post explores our production webhook architecture and demonstrates its power through a real example: an automated time-gating system where paid content becomes public after 7 days. Why Webhooks Matter for Ghost Ghost's philosophy centers on simplic

Ghost on AWS: Backup and Disaster Recovery
Running Ghost in production requires more than just high availability - you need a comprehensive backup strategy that ensures business continuity when disasters strike. This post details a production-ready backup implementation using AWS Backup that provides automated backups, monitoring, and rapid recovery capabilities for both your database and content. Understanding RPO and RTO Before diving into implementation, it's crucial to understand two key disaster recovery metrics: *

Ghost on AWS: Monitoring, Logging, and Operational Excellence
Running Ghost on AWS requires visibility into application performance, system health, and user experience. Without proper monitoring, you're flying blind - unable to detect issues before users complain or understand what went wrong when problems occur. This post details a comprehensive monitoring setup that provides complete operational visibility at a reasonable cost. The monitoring infrastructure we've built provides comprehensive visibility with seven operational alarms plus intelligent dep

Ghost on AWS: ActivityPub Federation
Ghost recently released ActivityPub support, enabling Ghost blogs to participate in the Fediverse alongside Mastodon, Threads, and other federated platforms. Through extensive testing and production deployment, we discovered that the official ActivityPub container has a bug that prevents self-hosted ActivityPub deployments from working. Combined with AWS-specific networking challenges, we had to modify the container source code to achieve working federation. Common Errors Through the proces

Ghost on AWS: Email and Newsletter Automation
Ghost handles email differently than most CMS platforms. It ships with newsletter capabilities built-in but requires external SMTP for transactional emails and lacks automated digest features entirely. This post covers setting up both transactional email through Mailgun and building an automated weekly digest system using AWS Lambda and EventBridge. The weekly digest system we built sends every Monday at 9 AM, compiles posts from the past week into bookmark cards, and integrates with Ghost's n

Ghost on AWS: S3 Storage and CloudFront CDN
Running Ghost in containers presents a storage challenge. Container filesystems are ephemeral - when a container restarts, any locally stored files disappear. This includes all uploaded images, making local storage unsuitable for production Ghost deployments on ECS. The solution uses S3 for persistent storage and CloudFront for global content delivery. Ghost uploads images to S3, which persist across container restarts and scale across multiple container instances. CloudFront serves these imag

Ghost on AWS: Core Infrastructure with CDK
Ghost requires a MySQL database, persistent storage for content and images, and a way to handle traffic at scale. AWS provides these through RDS Aurora, EFS, S3, and ECS Fargate. This post walks through deploying the core infrastructure using AWS CDK, which allows us to define everything as TypeScript code rather than clicking through the AWS console. The infrastructure we're building costs approximately $175 per month. The largest costs are the database ($47/month) and NAT Gateway ($32/month)
