The Look
The man in the checked shirt turned round and looked straight at the camera as I walked past. It was a hip shot. I don’t think he knew he was the subject of my photo.

The Long White Museum
The Museu de les Ciències in Valencia is a spectacular sight. Santiago Calatrava’s building goes on for a long way, a row of white concrete ribs and arches with a wide flight of steps at one end.

Cash Point Companion
Two people were taking out cash but the doggy was keeping an eye on the crowds walking past, and probably looking for other dogs as they were a common sight on the streets of Valencia.

The Puddle Mirror
A puddle covered most of the floor of the car park at the Kingsley Hotel and luckily no cars drove through it while I had my camera down low by the water’s edge. I love how this came out.

Last Light on Shandon
I stopped at the corner of Cattle Market Avenue as the evening sun dropped behind the rooftops. The street was already in shade. What light was left fell on Shandon’s tower, clock and gold salmon included, and on a Lidl Connect billboard on the wall beside me. A lovely evening to be out in Cork […]

The Roar and the Indifference
Today started early with a drive to Killarney before sunrise. I got there a few minutes after 7:30am and in the cold donned wellies and wrapped up well. Soon the world started to brighten and sooner still I regretted wearing wellies instead of my comfortable runners. The deer were elusive most of the day but […]

Flamenco by Appointment
On a team meetup in Madrid in 2017, a group of us went to see flamenco dancing at Cardamomo. The dancer spun fast enough to blur, with two guitarists, a singer and two men clapping behind. I’m not sure what I expected, but it didn’t move me. The reviews are glowing, though. Every seat I […]

Hagia Sophia from the Fountain
I walked through Sultanahmet Park on a bright October afternoon while clouds moved quickly over the Hagia Sophia. The fountain in the middle of the park was a pleasure to watch and lots of people were enjoying it, taking time to sit and take in the sound of water falling.

Upside Down on Kennedy Quay
I took this in January 2018 on Kennedy Quay, after rain had left wide puddles across the broken tarmac. The same photo now would only show blue sky and clouds as the R&H Hall building has since been demolished.

The Watcher by the Wall
I found this stag at the edge of a field in Killarney National Park in October 2022, standing under an old tree behind a mossy stone wall. I think we were just headed for a late breakfast when someone spotted him in a field off the road.

Salamah on Sullivan’s Quay
In August 2022 the gable at the corner of Sullivan’s Quay and Drinan Street carried Joe Caslin’s portrait of Salamah, a woman seeking asylum in Ireland, with two huge hands held over her head like a roof. It was part of A Story of Home, a Cork Midsummer Festival project made with the Cork Migrant […]

A Pathway Below the Waterline
At low tide the Thames drops several metres and leaves a wide strip of shingle below the Oxo Gallery on the South Bank, scattered with broken brick. I wondered about this framed pathway was going into the river. It’s only visible at low tide. It looks old. Was it a causeway for people to reach […]

A Dog on Watch
It was really nice on South Bank in London. The sun was shining and the crowds had yet to descend on the area we were walking along. That dog was on alert though, watching everyone walk by.

A Soft Sunset over Alicante
The sun had already gone down over the port at Alicante when I took this, leaving a band of orange over the cranes that faded into clear blue. There were no clouds to catch the light of the sun that had already fallen below the horizon, but I was glad of the glow on the […]

Orange Against the Blue
Alicante was still hot in late September, and the shade by the port didn’t reach far. A woman stepped out of it with her orange umbrella already up, tilting it against the sun as she walked. I could have done with an umbrella TBH. Local temperatures hit 30C, and we ducked into the nearby “The […]

Lines on Lines
The sun was high in Alicante, but the tall buildings and narrow streets cast deep shadows I took advantage of. The horizontal lines of this primary school had to be black and white. I looked it up on Google Maps and found it here, but if you look at Street View, the only images are […]

Blue and Green in Óbidos
The white wall with its thick blue trim caught my eye in Óbidos. I love that blue colour. I love to see matching colours too, so I was delighted to see matching green, and then the man in the blue polo shirt. Matchy-matchy!

The Óbidos Cat
Óbidos has a castle and a full circuit of medieval walls, but plenty of people were stopping for the cat instead. He lay on his back on the cobbles in the middle of the street, happy with a rub behind the ears and a few words from anyone who bent down. With that coat, he's...

Which Way Now?
A tourist stopped to check her map, standing in the sun outside the walls of Óbidos Castle. Deep shadows surround her, where I preferred to stand, out of the heat of the sun.

Óbidos from the Ramparts
Trees provide shade just inside the town walls of Óbidos in Portugal and a couple sat in a net hammock to enjoy the view. The sun was bright in the street but under the shade it was pleasant.
