Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 07-13-26
It has been 12 days since I last published "daily" Pook-Emu Bee links due to some combination of being busy and not feeling my best. Both of those blockers exist today, but I have time to squeeze in a new edition. [caption id="attachment_6359" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] I photographed this bee hard at work in Brooklyn Bridge...

Merlin Bird ID for the bird obsessed
I am not a seasoned birdwatcher by any means, but I love watching birds. I live near a very large state park that has undertaken extensive efforts to conserve birds native to our region, so we’re fortunate to have tons of birds right in our backyard When I discovered the Merlin Bird ID app a couple of years ago, I was immediately hooked. Made by the Cornell Lab or Ornithology, this app listens to the bird sounds around you and then (with a somewhat high degree of accuracy based on my experience ...

Weighing Large Owls
I have never had to weigh an owl before, much less a large owl. But in the event I were ever called upon to weigh a large owl, I learned from MARS Wildlife Rescue, via Owls in Towels (see Owls in Towels re-post) that I should first “burrito” the large owl in a towel and...

Bluebirds!
Thanks to conservation efforts in our region, eastern bluebirds are once again common sightings. But they still amaze me, with their bright coloring and gentle nature. This bluebird couple appears to be taking up residence in our backyard this spring. The male is one of the brightest colors of blue I’ve ever seen on one of these birds. And while the females are generally known for more drab coloring that helps aid in their camouflaging while nesting, this particular female is a gorgeous pale bab...

Bird pictures
A Great Crested Flycatcher. A pretty rare sighting, as these usually stay up in tree tops. Blue jay, one of my favorite birds. Northern Flicker woodpecker.

Spring
I hate the cold weather part of spring, which is where we are right now, but I love seeing all the little signs of spring starting. Like birds! And trees blooming!
