Making billions of dollars from the federated social web
Diaspora was pretty exciting. A Kickstarter campaign that promised it all: a platform created "for everyone to have full control over their data and to empower people in to become responsible, secure, and social Internet dwellers". They raised over $200,000, which at the time was the largest Kickstarter funding round ever. Neat! Yesterday, Diaspora announced that they were becoming a community project. That means that the wider open source community will be responsible for its direction; the or

Community ownership and social networks as markets
Johannes Ernst just put me to shame by writing this blog post while sitting next to me at Elgg Camp San Francisco: [...] But there’s a stronger undertone from speaker after speaker talking about their projects. It’s about how the community wants and needs to own and control their social network (instead of just merely having a little section inside a worldwide social network). And how the community wouldn’t be as strong if they couldn’t. About the community needing to evolve the communication t

Double-plus Google: finally, a mass market enterprise social network
I'll spare you the summary post for Google+; you can get that on TechCrunch, Mashable, the New York Times and in about a thousand other places. It's a social sharing component that's directly integrated into Google, enhancing everything they do. It puts privacy front and center using a long-rumored feature called Circles, which in my opinion mostly serves to make the user feel safe (after all, the data is still all stored on Google's servers, so any appearance of deep privacy is an illusion). It

Where to find me at SXSW
I'm stoked to be at this year's South By Southwest Interactive festival in Austin. As well as enjoying the talks, attending events and enjoying wandering around one of my favorite cities in the world, I'm appearing as part of two panels: The Why & How Of Decentralized Web Identity with Blaine Cook and Christian Sandvig (March 12, 11am in the TX Ballroom 2-4 at the Hyatt) Wikileaks, the Web, and the Long, Strange Journey of Journalism with James Moore and Scott Braddock (March 15, 9:30am in th

Building a distributed social network? You’re doing it wrong.
Here are some distributed social networking platforms and technologies designed to facilitate distributed social networking: * Status.net * DiSo * 6D * Kopal * DSNP * Noserub * Appleseed * OneSocialWeb * Diaspora (included for completeness, but there isn’t any code yet) Wow, that’s a lot! And following Diaspora’s flurry of both coverage and cash, you can bet there’ll be plenty more to come. But of all the projects listed above, I’d argue that only Status.net is orientated around consu

Direct messaging in a social web architecture
This post is the third segment in my series on an architecture for the social web. Previously: How social networks can replace email, which is a non-technical approach to the issues, and my follow-up describing how to build a social web architecture using available technology today. So what about direct messaging? In my previous post, I described content notifications in the social web as being Activity Streams updates in response to requests signed with an OAuth key. Each individual contact w

Activity Streams and OAuth: a social web architecture
My previous post was a response to Gartner’s prediction last month that social networking would replace email as the “primary vehicle for interpersonal communications for 20 percent of business users.” In it, I named some properties that would need to be held by any social networking system that would successfully replace email. * Ease of use * Ubiquity across devices * Platform, service and infrastructure independence My argument boiled down to the following statement: Email has succeeded

How social networks can replace email
The analysis firm Gartner just released five key predictions for social software: 1. By 2014, social networking services will replace e-mail as the primary vehicle for interpersonal communications for 20 percent of business users. 2. By 2012, over 50 percent of enterprises will use activity streams that include microblogging, but stand-alone enterprise microblogging will have less than 5 percent penetration. 3. Through 2012, over 70 percent of IT-dominated social media initiatives will fail.

Building the user-centered web
The following post contains my notes for a talk I gave at the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at Harvard University on June 25, 2009. What is a social network? I would like to reclaim some language: Social is an adjective that means relating to human society and its members. A network is an interconnected system of things or people. Therefore, I’d suggest that we can define a social network as just being an interconnected system of people. The audience of this talk is a social ne

Social networking: beyond the silo
1. The rise of social networking 2. Monetization vs. collaboration 3. The open web 4. Fluid collaboration The rise of social networking Social forces have been the driving force behind application innovation on the web. Whereas previously we might have looked to advances in computer science for new directions, now some of the most dramatically impactful applications are lightweight, simple, and technologically unimpressive. The best new web applications have centered around collaboration,

WordPress Multi User and ad hoc communities
The emerging news out of WordCamp 2009 in San Francisco is that WordPress and its Multi User cousin are to merge into one product (further discussion). This makes a ton of sense, and makes it even easier to create a community of blogs. I’m looking forward to this – I could keep my main blog at benwerd.com focused on technology, as it is now, but start a separate blog about my hometown at oxford.benwerd.com, using the same installation. Not a bad deal. Of course, Automattic also own Andy Peatlin

Elgg 1.5
Elgg 1.5 was released today. There's an official post over at news.elgg.org, but I wanted to make a note of it here too. This is the longest we've taken over a release since 1.0, and there are almost eight hundred significant engine changes since the previous version. More than one person has remarked to me (while testing the release candidates) that it feels more like a version 2.0. Marcus points out: Elgg 1.5 has loads of new functionality - both visible and under the hood. There’s a brand n

The Internet is People
The following post is a fleshed-out version of my notes for my talk at the Elgg International Conference on Monday, December 1st, wherein I discussed my attitude to social networks and how they should be built. My slides are available in Powerpoint or OpenDocument Presentation format. Let's take this to first principles. Stating the obvious, what is a social network? Is it a collection of profiles, friends lists and so on, or is it something more fundamental? What does the term even mean? Soc
