The single reason I do not use Tailwind CSS—It's inefficient for prototyping
At this week's ColumbusJS Meetup where Nathan Lieberman presented on Tailwind CSS, I once again complained about the fact that I cannot use Tailwind CSS to prototype in the browser without context switching back to an editor. **It is probably the single reason I do not use Tailwind CSS.** To explain the problem again, the work flow for using Tailwind CSS is inefficient: 1. Add/remove/change CSS class in IDE or editor guessing what would work. 2. Wait for hot reload. 3. Change to a browser to visually test. 4. Change back to IDE or editor to refine 5. The Tailwind Labs Story: How AI Disrupted a Successful Business Model
On January 6, 2026, Adam Wathan, creator of Tailwind CSS, made a difficult announcement that sent shockwaves through the web development community: Tailwind Labs laid off 75% of its engineering team—three out of four engineers—despite the framework being more popular than ever. The layoffs occurred because of a brutal 80% revenue collapse, driven primarily by the way artificial intelligence has fundamentally altered how developers learn, build, and consume development tools. This situation represents a watershed moment in understanding how AI impacts not just the broader tech industry, but specifically the economics of open-source software businesses and their commercial derivatives.
