the extent to which i trust my intuition is a blessing and a curse. on the one hand, confidence is very helpful. if i trust myself enough to lean on my intuition and things go well, my confidence increases and i feel more capable. like power stances in the mirror have some scientific basis, i think this makes a difference. on the other hand, i am often duped by my own aggrandized or myopic self-narration. in particular, confidence to paper over a lack of discipline that is not healthy5
Right Place, Write Time
INT. APARTMENT - DAY Drew, (30), hunches over his desk staring at a blank screen, wondering if words will just miraculously appear. I really should be writing more, but I don't have a good script idea right now.1

Things that didn't suck this week
May 29 - June 5 Hope there were some things in your life that didn’t suck this week!1
shoulders are the poorest designed feature of the human body
on monday i was doing basic yardwork and somehow tore my shoulder labrum, which i didn't know until wednesday. i wasn't convinced that i could've had an injury like this from only shoveling mulch so i started researching how shoulders work. turns out they're pretty badly designed. most joints in your body are built around stability. hip is a deep ball-and-socket. it sits inside a cup that's more than half enclosed in bone. knees are hinges reinforced by some of the strongest ligaments in the bod...2
Gaysploitation Forever!
Do not let factoids, TikToks, Instagram reels, or neatly packaged retrospectives fool you: gay people have not always been represented in Hollywood, not in any legible way. They were present, of course, most commonly behind the camera. But on screen they flickered in and out like phantoms: suggested and coded, but rarely named. Queer cinema began in the margins. “Gaysploitation” is one of those terms that exists almost entirely in the margins as well. There is no official entry for it in the ca...1
what's your conspiracy theory?
i'm not a conspiracy theorist, but everyone has That One Thing. mine is that the water in the US is what is making everyone sick. i'm not sure who needs to hear this, but if you (or anyone in your gene pool) has a type of auto-inflammatory condition and you live in the US/UK/Canada/Australia, your symptoms are probably made worse by chloramine, AKA your tap water. what is chloramine and why is it here?1
Merlin Bird ID for the bird obsessed
I am not a seasoned birdwatcher by any means, but I love watching birds. I live near a very large state park that has undertaken extensive efforts to conserve birds native to our region, so we’re fortunate to have tons of birds right in our backyard When I discovered the Merlin Bird ID app a couple of years ago, I was immediately hooked. Made by the Cornell Lab or Ornithology, this app listens to the bird sounds around you and then (with a somewhat high degree of accuracy based on my experience ...2
My Return to Insanity
I've written plenty of times about how, toward the end of 2024, I left most mainstream social media platforms. Especially those that were run by people that could be categorized as being part of what I call our “Broligarchy,” i.e. the tech bros that run companies like Meta and X (formerly Twitter). I cleaned out my accounts on Instagram, Threads, and X, and even fully took my Facebook and WhatsApp accounts off life support entirely by fully deleting them. I found a new home on places like Bluesk...2
if i can make it there
The year was 2008, and the movie was Elizabethtown. Actually, that movie was released in 2005 but by 2008 the DVD was out. And DVDs mean only one thing: you watch the same movie over and over until you get sick of it...or until you get just plain sick. Either works. Elizabethtown is not a very good movie at all. It's got a few things going for it, though. Paul Schneider is in it. Alec Baldwin does a pithy but surprisingly amusing cameo in it. The band My Morning Jacket is in it. In point of fact...1
"Memory Full, Vol. 6 - Secrets," V/A
In the words of the publication's editors: MEMORY FULL is a group publication that was started in 2011 as a way to show and share cell phone pictures away from a screen and in the real world. It is published on an irregular basis, with each volume possibly being the last. Another product of Western Massachusetts, one I again picked up from the Northampton Art Book / Print fair1
Trip to Soap Plant WACKO
I went up to LA today with Fig, it was a lot of fun! We were initially going to go to this art supply warehouse place (not in LA) but it apparently is right on the edge of an evacuation zone for this chemical tank that is potentially going to EXPLODE,,, and we didn't want to take the risk on that... If the chemical tank were to explode, it is expected to explode in the opposite direction of the art supply store, but still, we didn't want to risk it. So we went up to LA instead and went to Soap P...2
