AUG 2026: GDP down 0.01

The August monthly GDP report shows that the Canadian economy basically stalled (down 0.01% month-over-month), continuing the trend of lackluster performance in the third quarter (July MoM growth was also about 0.03%).

The details of the August report are a bit more encouraging than the headline number suggests.

StatCan’s Monthly GDP Report

Statistics Canada publishes monthly GDP data using the production approach (or called value added approach), which lists the net value (outputs minus intermediate consumptions) generated by different industries within the month.

The monthly GDP figures are released at the end of the second month after that month ended; StatCan, nonetheless, would provide an advance estimate for the MoM GDP growth rate at one month prior.

  • That is, for January monthly GDP data, StatCan would first report the advance estimate of the MoM growth rate in late-February, then would release the full report towards the end of March.

StatCan’s Quarterly GDP Report

StatCan also publishes quarterly GDP figures using the expenditures approach, i.e. using the C + I + G + NX formula to compute total domestic expenditures in the quarter.

The quarterly report is generally release at the end the second month after the quarter ended.

  • That is, for the Q1 data, the Canadian statistical agency would release the full report around late May.
