Next VAAC Friday Community Meeting | Disability Pride Month: Building a Democracy That Includes Everyone on July 17
July 17's VAAC Friday Community Meeting will focus on Disability Pride Month and the connection between disability rights, voting rights, and civil rights. We will discuss barriers voters with disabilities continue to face and how communities, advocates, and election officials can support accessible participation.
Disability Pride Month is a time to recognize the history, leadership, and experiences of people with disabilities. It is also a reminder that disability rights, voting rights, and civil rights are connected.
Voting access means more than being legally eligible to vote. It also means voters can get the information, assistance, accommodations, and accessible options they need to participate.
Join Voting Access For All Coalition (VAAC) on Friday, July 17 at 12:30 PM ET at bit.ly/VAACFridays for a community conversation focused on Disability Pride Month, voting rights, and building elections and communities that include everyone.
This week, VAAC will be joined by:
✨ Eric Welsby, Advocacy Director at Detroit Disability Power
✨ Christopher Samp, Director of the Office of Disability Affairs with the Civil Rights, Inclusion, & Opportunity Department for the City of Detroit
Eric will discuss disability voting rights, accessible voting equipment, common accessibility barriers voters may encounter, and how advocates, election officials, poll challengers, and election protection volunteers can help ensure every eligible voter can cast their ballot independently, privately, and with dignity.
Christopher will share more about the City of Detroit’s Office of Disability Affairs, the work the office is leading, and resources available to Detroit residents.
This meeting will cover:
• Disability voting rights and protections for voters with disabilities
• Accessible voting equipment, including Voter Assist Terminals
• Common accessibility barriers before, during, and after voting
• What poll challengers, election protection volunteers, election officials, and advocates should watch for on Election Day
• How to help ensure every eligible voter can cast their ballot independently, privately, and with dignity
• The work Detroit Disability Power and Detroit’s Office of Disability Affairs are leading
VAAC Friday meetings bring together directly impacted people, advocates, organizers, and community members from across Michigan to learn, connect, and stay informed about the issues affecting our communities. All are welcome!
